The shady side of Demi Lovato

First things first : Demi Lovato is awesome. She's one of the best vocalists of her generation, she's gorgeous, and she's one of the most vocal advocates for mental health awareness ever. That being said, she's not without her flaws. Here are some ways the stunning "Confident" songstress can be really shady.

In November 2010, Demi Lovato was accused of punching backup dancer Alex Welch in the face during a flight, forcing Lovato to leave her joint tour with the Jonas Brothers to go to rehab. What spawned the sucker punch? The Daily Mail reports that Lovato thinks Welch snitched and told tour crews that Lovato was off partying with a small group after a show.

Selena Gomez and Lovato first became pals when they both starred in Barney and Friends as children. Their friendship continued into their Disney days, with Gomez reportedly getting Lovato her Camp Rock audition. In 2010, their friendship showed its first signs of strain when a fan was on camera asking Lovato, "How's Selena?" and Lovato replied, "Ask Taylor [Swift]." The pair eventually made up and Lovato revealed that Gomez was one of the only people to contact her while she was in rehab in November 2010.

While Gomez has remained publicly diplomatic about their roller coaster friendship, when Complex asked Lovato in September 2015 if she and her Princess Protection Program buddy still talk, she simply replied, "Nope."

During a Complex interview in summer 2015, Lovato threw what many interpreted as Taylor Swift #squad shade. "I don't really hang out with celebrities," she said. "I'm not the type of person that's on Instagram posting pictures of me and tons of my best friends…I don't have anybody around me who kisses my ass."

She also spoke to Cosmopolitan, which many interpreted as Miley Cyrus shade. "There are a lot of girls in pop. They have badass lyrics, but I feel like I'm the only person other than Rihanna and Nicki Minaj who isn't afraid to say, 'Try something on me and I'll f***ing beat your a**.'" Yeah, Alex Welch knows.

In October 2015, Lovato was finalizing a deal with American Idol alum Adam Lambert for a co-headlining tour…and then she pulled the rug from under him. TMZ reports that Lovato backed out at the last minute, replacing Lambert with her labelmate and BFF, Nick Jonas. Sources close to Lambert claimed the move was totally unexpected and "very unprofessional and unethical."

It looks like that move is going to cost fans, too: Jonas and Lovato's tour packages are pricier than ever. People reports that their "Ultimate VIP Dressing Room" package has a ton of perks for $10,000…but doesn't even include an actual ticket to the concert. The VIP package's meet and greet may not even be a good experience. In November, a disappointed fan from a meet and greet wrote an angry letter to Lovato on Instagram saying that she was rushed, rude, and eager to get away from the very supporters who give her success and tons of extra money.

Lovato's Twitter beefs are endless. She continued an ongoing beef with comedienne Kathy Griffin in September 2015. She publicly and visibly unfollowed on-again, off-again BFF Selena Gomez in August 2014. Lovato lashed out at singer Pink in September 2015 after taking offense at her comments about the MTV Video Music Awards. Back in 2009, she and Miley Cyrus' older brother, Trace Cyrus, actually broke up on Twitter.

Lovato told Complex in summer 2015, "I think 'Waiting for Ya' is a pretty ballsy song…that's the song where I show you that a lot of people have their cute little feuds in public, but I don't really have those because if you want to have a feud, you can just come to me in person and we'll settle it." Right.

When Lovato was on The X Factor in 2012, she and Simon Cowell made it quite clear that there was something up with One Direction singer Niall Horan. The two insinuated that Lovato and Noran frequently Skyped together. Lovato revealed on Girl Code Live in October 2015 that she ghosted on a Skype relationship, telling the hosts, "I've actually had a situation where I think somebody had an alarm set on their phone. They would Skype me every time…I told them basically, 'Hey, I am not interested. Please leave me alone.' And then, yeah, they kind of took the hint, I guess. And then I changed my number and completely ignored them…I wasn't even dating him. That's the thing…Like, if you knew who it was…he is not a stalker."

Sure, she didn't mention any names, but if you follow Horan or Lovato at all, it's pretty clear to whom she was referring.

Lovato began dating former That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama in 2010. Their relationship started out tumultuously, with a lot of breakups and makeups. They seem rock solid now, and Lovato credits Valderrama with a lot of her recovery.

Still, their history is a little creepy. They began dating when she was just barely 18 to his 30, and that's been a pattern for him. Valderrama dated Mandy Moore for two years when she was just 16 to his 20 and Lindsay Lohan when she had just turned 18 to his 24. He later boasted, quite vulgarly, about his intimate relationships with both of these much younger women. It makes you wonder why Lovato thinks she doesn't deserve better—and if, at 23, she may be getting almost too old for his tastes.

Lovato prides herself on celebrating a healthy body image, especially after her public struggles with bulimia. That makes her friendships with the Kardashians questionable, as these women document their diets, their "waist training" corsets, and their obsession with cosmetic fillers constantly. It seems to completely counter Lovato's message to fans to love themselves as they are when she pals around with people who not only transform themselves with plastic surgery, but also deny it.

Lovato seems to struggle with her musical identity, because with every album, she seems to have a new sound. That would be fine, but she also insists that every new sound is who she really is. For her sophomore effort Here We Go Again, Lovato told MTV News, "It's going to take a different sound, so hopefully it goes over well. I sing a lot of rock, but this time I want to do more John Mayer-ish type of songs."

For Unbroken in 2011, Lovato told The Ralphie Radio Show, "Every other album I haven't had time to really take my time and craft it like I really wanted to…you can definitely tell that I took my time with this record." When promoting Demi in 2012, she told Billboard, "For me, Unbroken wasn't my favorite album, and this one is my favorite one so far."

Incredible 90s boy bands you totally forgot about

There was a time in the ’90s were it seemed a brand new boy band was born every week. It was a wonderful time, a time when romantic ear-worms were released by your celeb crushes on the regular, and you could pop in that cassette tape or CD single and listen to your favorite heart-bursting jam over and over again.

Of course there was the pantheon of greats: The Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, 98 Degrees. But there were also a whooooooole crop of other bleach-tipped, choker wearing, crooners who stole our adolescent hearts. Don’t tell us you forgot about Youth Asylum. Oh, you did? Well there are probably a few other bands, that had the prime spot on your middle school mix tapes, that you haven’t thought about in far too long. Let’s rediscover our musical youth.

BBMak

Just go ahead and try to tell me that “Back Here” wasn’t on repeat at either a school dance or a slumber party. BBMak were in constant rotation on MTV’s TRL back in the day, and even guest starred on Disney Channel’s Even Stevens (Oh, sweet young Shia.) Sadly they broke up in 2003, but there is still probably a BBMak CD somewhere in your childhood bedroom.

Boyzone

Fun fact: Boyzone is still touring. What the what. They’ve been together since 1993, but are now called BZ20, strong move considering they now they appear to be grown men. Their latest album, From Dublin to Detroit, is all covers of motown songs. Did I forget to mention that they originally hail from Ireland?

O-Town

Can you name any of the members of O-Town aside from Ashley Parker Angel? O-Town was born out of ABC and MTV’s Making The Band, and it will probably always be remembered as the best boy band reality TV program ever to grace the small screen. They were pretty popular for a while, and Ashley Parker Angel was on many a backpack . . . I wish I still had mine. Technically they were formed in 2000 but their vibe is pure ’90s.

Westlife

Another Irish boy band, these guys got their first big break when they opened for the Backstreet Boys in Dublin. Their original manager was Simon Cowell, and their popularity grew so quickly, they were included on Pokémon: The Movie 2000’s soundtrack. Ah, simpler times

Youngstown

Oh gosh, remember back in the day when bands used to do direct tie-in music videos for songs off of movie soundtracks? No, I’m not talking like Lorde’s “Yellow Flicker Beat” style, I’m talking Youngstown hardcore saying the words “go, go, Gadget” in their single released for Inspector Gadget. They even got their own concert special on the Disney Channel to coincide with their song on the Princess Diaries soundtrack! That’s some artistry right there.

Kylie Jenner Reveals the Reason She & Tyga Broke Up

Tyga and Kylie Jenner have stayed relatively silent since their breakup in April, but in the latest episode of Jenner's reality TV show Life With the Kylie, the 20 year-old entrepreneur explained that their breakup was largely due to their noticeable age difference. 

In a clip from the show, Jenner is quick to deny that their breakup was due to dramatic fight.

"There was absolutely not one thing wrong with me and T," she says. "Him and I will always, always have a bond. There was no crazy fight. We just decided, well, I decided that I’m really young. I don’t want to look back five years from now and feel like he took something from me when he’s really not that type of person."

While Tyga and Jenner's relationship ended on good terms, Jenner's good friend Jordyn Woods reveals that the couple wasn't able to avoid the post-breakup awkwardness when they ran into each other at Coachella shortly following their split.

"Breaking up with someone, it’s like you go to being so close with someone -- them being your everything -- to seeing them and acting like you don’t know each other," Woods says in a later part of the episode.

Corinne Olympios' Message to DeMario Jackson After Bachelor in Paradise Scandal: "I'm Sorry"

"It was definitely really, really rough for me. There are no words."

Over two months after the incident that shutdown production on the fourth season of Bachelor in Paradise, Corinne Olympios is finally sharing her side of the story. While DeMario Jackson, the other contestant at the center of the controversy, spoke to E! News exclusively about the scandal before sitting down with Chris Harrison on last week's episode, Corinne had yet to break her silence. Until Tuesday night, when she had her chance to sit down with Harrison.

"This is my first time talking about what happened and my take on things and I would love for everyone to just have a better understanding of me," she said, before finally going into detail about what happened on that day of the production, which caused two producers to file misconduct complaints (Warner Bros. later cleared production of any wrongdoing following a two-week investigation).

"The first day, unfortunately, I don't remember much of," Corinne admitted. "I definitely overdrank, I did. I was also on some medicine that you're not supposed to drink on, which I didn't know. The combination of the two is just not a good combination, I am now weaning myself off that medication." (She started taking the medication, which she did not name, after her season of The Bachelor.)

Corinne also said she had never experienced a blackout before, saying, "It was obviously very scary for me and very different."

Because she was known as the "fun" Corinne during her season, the 25-year-old said there was "no way" for DeMario or the production crew to know she was "mentally checked out...which is beyond scary, but it is what it is I guess. I don't think it's anyone's fault, I just think that it was, again, an unfortunate and annoying situation that had to go down and it really sucks."

Throughout her sitdown, Harrison had Corinne watch portions of his interview with DeMario, who she said she doesn't blame for what happened. "I honestly don't feel like he did anything wrong." She later added, "I really just want people to know that I don't blame DeMario. I never pointed fingers at DeMario. I never said a bad word about DeMario."

As for what she would say to DeMario, who she has yet to speak with since the shutdown, Corinne said, "I would want to tell him, like listen, I respect you as a human. I have nothing against you. I am so sorry you had to go through this. I know exactly what it feels like...and I wish you all the best and I'm sorry."

Of  the media attention and public scrutiny she experienced after the scandal, Corinne admitted, "It was definitely really, really rough for me. There are no words."

Corinne said she had "no idea" how big the scandal would become, saying, "When I watch it, I'm like, how did this happen? It's just so annoying. There's no other way to put it."

This Asian Curve Model Is Out To Smash Some Stereotypes

“We’re all different. We can’t build a mold and expect people to all fit in that mold.”

Women over a certain size are constantly having to shatter stereotypes. But one stereotype in particular may not last much longer.

Natalie Nootenboom is a 16-year-old up-and-coming model and the niece of famous DJ Steve Aoki. She looks up to him, she told Revelist, “because he broke Asian norms with his music.”

She hopes to break Asian norms, too, in her new and bustling modeling career. Nootenboom is a curve, or plus-size model she just signed with the inclusive agency Muse and said she hopes to destroy the notion that all Asian women are “petite, cute, and skinny.”

“The norm for Asian girls is to be, you know, petite, cute, and skinny,” she told Revelist. “But growing up, I kind of was taller, bigger, more awkward.  I was the opposite of what people expected me to be, and so I really want to use my platform to say, you know what? We’re all different. We can’t build a mold and expect people to all fit that mold.”

Nootenboom told HuffPost that when it comes to creating a more diverse and inclusive fashion industry, it’s careless to focus only on one thing.

“You can’t talk about diversity without addressing different kinds,” she said. “Diversity is going beyond ethnicity and size. The more I am able to showcase that in the industry,

I will.”She credits her sister Yumi, who is also a plus-size model, with teaching her confidence, and says learning about self-love is responsible for the appreciation she has for her body. She cites Katie Willcox, a plus-size model and author of the book “Healthy is the New Skinny,” as an inspiration.

Page Six Wants to Rule the World again

Once upon a time, Page Six, the New York Post gossip section, actually appeared on page six. Like on Jan. 3, 1977, when the first edition ran, complete with tidbits about Margaux Hemingway, Henry Kissinger, Steve McQueen, Jackie Onassis and John F. Kennedy Jr. (see below).

Legendary journalist James Brady—who later went on to become an Ad Age columnist (he died in 2009)—created Page Six at the behest of the paper's owner Rupert Murdoch, who'd bought the New York tabloid for $30.5 million in 1976. It wasn't long before Page Six became a major force in New York media—an inky forum where reputations could be ruined or burnished, the famous humbled, fledgling celebrities given a boost and hot spots annointed or suddenly iced out. Other print gossip franchises tried to match Page Six's momentum (from New York Magazine's Intelligencer section to The New York Times' "Public Lives" column), but it wasn't until the internet's mid-childhood that it faced serious competition (Gawker, TMZ).

Now Page Six is making a fresh bid for relevance—and crossplatform dominance. Here's what you need to know:

Page Six TV launches next month
It seems like the possibility of a TV version of the gossip page has been been floated forever, but now it's actually happening. Endemol Shine North America and the Post are launching Page Six TV on Sept. 18. Twentieth Television is handling distribution and has placed the show into more than 200 local markets covering 98% of the country. It'll be hosted by John Fugelsang (Sirius XM Radio/VH1) and will feature a panel of "Page Six TV Insiders" including Page Six Editor Emily Smith, reporter Carlos Greer, Bevy Smith (Bravo's "Fashion Queens") and Variety's Elizabeth Wagmeister.

Page Six - the print version - gets a refresh starting today

"It had been decades since Page Six in print had been significantly changed, and it was due for a renovation," New York Post CEO-Publisher Jesse Angelo tells Ad Age. The logo you're familiar with remains the same, but as for the rest of the page, "We wanted to make it easier for the eye to follow, to give some new visual cues to famous features like 'Blind Items.' ... Perhaps the most immediate thing people will notice is that instead of a cartoon every day, Page Six will have more photos."

Page Six long ago strayed from its original place (you're more likely to find it on, say, page 8 or 12). And it also continues to be run longer than just one page, all the better to offer adjacencies to advertisers—including Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Steve Madden, Ralph Lauren and Corcoran—who know that pretty much anyone who picks up a Post is going to turn to Page Six.

Page Six is now also a standalone mobile app

Earlier this month the New York Post quietly introduced a new standalone Page Six app for iOS and Android (separate from the existing New York Post app) as a bid to expand the brand's digital reach beyond nypost.com/pagesix.com and appeal to readers who may have never actually seen a physical copy of the Post. (Two big stories on the app this morning: "Kevin Hart urges celebs to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief" and "J-Rod is this summer's hottest celebrity couple.")

"Our largest print footprint is the five [New York] boroughs and the suburbs, but we still have a very sizable readership in Florida, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles and the areas surrounding," says Angelo, who also serves as chief of digital advertising solutions at Post parent News Corp. "Digitally, both pagesix.com and nypost.com are national brands—over 80% of our traffic comes from outside the New York DMA," he adds.

One very noticeable new thing on pagesix.com and in the app: the Page Six TV section—now basically a teaser, but set to become a full-fledged mobile companion for the TV show (on which Angelo also serves as an executive producer) starting Sept. 18.

And in anothor bit of Murdochian synergy, the Fox Television Stations group is giving a big boost to "Page Six TV," launching it into 16 key markets, including New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Russell Brand ties the knot with Laura Gallacher

Russell Brand has tied the knot — again! The British comedic genius married fiancee Laura Gallacher in a beautifully intimate ceremony attended by friends and family on Aug. 26. One person who wasn’t on the guest list: Russell’s ex-wife Katy Perry!

Five years after his nasty split from ex-wife Katy Perry, 32, British actor and comedian Russell Brand, 42, has settled down once more — hopefully for good! The British superstar married his fiancee (and the mother of his almost one-year-old child, Mabel) Laura Gallacher, 30, in a small but beautiful ceremony at Remenham Church near their family home in Henley-on-Thames, Oxon. The bride and groom both stuck to their signature unique styles while still looking totally matrimonial! “They wanted a very small, personal affair with their daughter Mabel, family and close friends rather than a circus,” a source told The Sun. “It was a lovely occasion. Mabel was guest of honour.”

French President Emmanuel Macron may be looking to rival Canada’s Justin Trudeau for “most handsome world leader.” That might explain the elaborate grooming routine that a French magazine reports is costing taxpayers some Marie Antoinette-level money.

French magazine Le Point reports that the Élysée Palace has paid a makeup artist named Natacha M. a sum of 26,000 Euro (over two payments, one for 10,000 Euro and another for 16,000) over the course of his past three months in office.

The amount converts to about $30,000, or roughly $330 per day since his May 14th inauguration, and is reported to have covered his looks for public appearances and news conferences. And though it may seem to be an astronomical sum, the Washington Post reports that his predecessors in office had similar expenditures (not great optics, as the newspaper points out, in a country where the average per-capita income is slightly less than three months of the president’s beauty budget).

NASA's ambitious plan to save Earth from a supervolcano

NASA believes the Yellowstone super volcano is a greater threat to life on Earth than any asteroid. So it has come up with a plan to defuse its explosive potential.

Yellowstone National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. It’s an untouched wilderness. It’s overflowing with scenic landscapes. And its colorful hot pools and geysers attract tens of thousands of visitors every year.

But underneath this beautiful — but thin — skin is a lurking monster.

An enormous pool of magma sits high in the Earth’s crust. It’s been calculated to contain about 60 billion cubic miles of molten rock.

“I was a member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense which studied ways for NASA to defend the planet from asteroids and comets,” Brian Wilcox of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) told the BBC. “I came to the conclusion during that study that the super volcano threat is substantially greater than the asteroid or comet threat.”

There are about 20 known super volcanoes on Earth, NASA says. A major eruption occurs about once every 100,000 years. And these odds are much higher than a repeat of an Earth-changing comet impact of the type that wiped out the dinosaurs.

So NASA tasked a team with figuring out how to prevent one.

A super volcano is very different from the common conception of tall cones of rock and ash that occasionally catastrophically erupt.

Instead, it’s a vast space of collapsed crust that can cover hundreds of square miles. And if it were to erupt, it would not be with a bang.

Rather, vast quantities of searing magma and clouds of fumes would slowly crawl across the landscape — burying much of the United States under a thick coat of ash and lava.

In the case of Yellowstone, it’s enough to change the climate of the world for several centuries.

It’s happened before.

Soil samples have uncovered lava flows hundreds of miles long — and miles thick — from past eruptions. And the ash falls were even more immense.

A much smaller event in Indonesia, about 75,000 years ago, named the Toba catastrophe, pumped some 8 million tons of hydrogen sulphide gas into the atmosphere along with about 670 cubic miles of ejecta. This produced a global volcanic winter that lasted a decade.

Yellowstone isn’t expected to erupt anytime soon. It appears to burst once every roughly 700,000 years. The most recent was 640,000 years ago, with other events 1.3 million years ago and 2.1 million years ago.

This is much more regular than cataclysmic comet impacts.

“When people first considered the idea of defending the Earth from an asteroid impact, they reacted in a similar way to the super volcano threat,” Wilcox said. “People thought, ‘As puny as we are, how can humans possibly prevent an asteroid from hitting the Earth?’”

NASA, however, has an idea.

NASA’s researchers told the BBC they have explored what it would take to avert a super volcano catastrophe.

The answer: Find a way to cool the magma down.

Super volcanoes only spill over when the molten rock is hot enough to become highly fluid.

In a slightly cooler state, it gets thicker. Stickier.

It’s not going anywhere fast.

The Jet Propulsion Labs team calculated that a super volcano on the brink of eruption would have to be cooled some 35 percent.

They propose to do this by pricking the super volcano’s surface, to let off steam.

But this in itself poses risks.

Drill too deep, and the vent could cause an explosive depressurization that might set off the exact kind of eruption the scientists were trying to avoid.

Instead, the NASA scientists propose drilling a 5-mile-deep hole into the hydrothermal water below and to the sides of the magma chamber. These fluids, which form Yellowstone’s famous heat pools and geysers, already drain some 60 to 70 percent of the heat from the magma chamber below.

NASA proposes that, in an emergency, this enormous body of heated water can be injected with cooler water, extracting yet more heat.

This could prevent the super volcano’s magma from reaching the temperature at which it would erupt.

Such a project could cost in excess of $3.5 billion. But it’s nothing like the reconstruction cost of digging two-thirds of the continental United States out from under mountains of volcanic ash.

And it could even help pay for itself.

Steam from the superheated water could be used to drive power turbines.

“You would pay back your initial investment, and get electricity which can power the surrounding area for a period of potentially tens of thousands of years,” Wilcox says.

'Wonder Woman' star Gal Gadot purposely lost the Miss Universe pageant

All that glitters isn’t gold … at least for Gal Gadot.

Prior to becoming a household name as an actress, the “Wonder Woman” star, 32, was a beauty pageant queen in her native Israel. Unbeknownst to Gadot, her family entered her in her first pageant when she was still a teenager.

“I told myself, ‘I’m just gonna do this. They’re gonna fly us to Europe, and I’m gonna get to tell my grandchildren that Grandmom did the Miss Israel thing,'” she recalled in the Aug. 25 issue of Rolling Stone. “Little did I know that I would win.”

The actress didn’t realize that winning Miss Israel would automatically make her a contestant in the iconic Miss Universe competition.

“I knew that I did not want to win Miss Universe. It wasn’t my thing,” she explained. “For an 18-year-old, it looked like too much responsibility.”

So Gadot opted to intentionally lose by pretending not to speak English and wearing the wrong clothes.

“I lost majorly,” she told the magazine. “I victoriously lost.”

Swift's album cover is a black-and-white photo of the singer with her hair slicked back and she's sporting bold lipstick. Swift's picture is superimposed over what looks like newspaper clippings with her name plastered everywhere.

Swimsuit model Kate Upton endures grueling Marines workout to raise awareness

The U.S. Marines put supermodel Kate Upton through her paces on Tuesday during a workout in Detroit to promote the upcoming Marine Week celebration in the city.

Upton struggled a bit at the end, but was able to complete the training routine that involved a series of aerobic exercises and running as her fiance, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, watched from afar. Upton joined several other Tigers players' wives and significant others in the session at Wayne State University's athletic complex that was led by Gunnery Sgt. Sara Pacheco, a Marine Corps fitness instructor.

"It was (a) very hard workout," Upton said following the exercise session, which she concluded by collapsing to the grass in an exhausted embrace with a fellow workout warrior. "I knew it was going to be hard. The Marines are very tough."

Verlander, a former American League most valuable player and winner of the Cy Young award as the league's top pitcher, said afterward that he was proud of Upton for her efforts.
"I think it's easy to show your support with words. I think going out there and doing that workout I think really shows how much she supports (the military)," Verlander said. He is the founder of the Wins for Warriors charity that supports military service members and their families.

Upton, a world-famous model who has appeared three times on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, was on hand to promote Marine Week, which runs Sept. 6-10, and is designed to provide the public with a better understanding of the Corps and its mission and the chance to connect with hundreds of Marines.

Why do stars continue to share nude pics despite hacks?

Tiger Woods, Lindsey Vonn, Katharine McPhee and Kristen Stewart are among the latest celebrity victims of a private photo leak.
 

They are far from the first stars to have their racy pictures hacked. Everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Scarlett Johansson to Emma Watson has had private photos stolen and published for the world to see: So why do A-listers continue to take nude pics knowing they could be leaked?
 

Clinical psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael speculated that stars play with fire due to “an unconscious conflict between a wish for privacy and a love of the spotlight.”
 

Carmichael suggested some stars may want the attention of having their photos leak online.
 

“It is possible that there is a part of the celebrity that enjoys the attention, and taking legal action actually intensifies the spotlight upon the event,” she said.
 

But Kevin Blatt, celebrity crisis expert with the VIP cyber security company Faction.One, said there's more to it than fame.
 

“I believe a lot of these celebs are complete narcissists. They love to see themselves naked or in a sexy, compromising position. They love to show themselves off," said Blatt.
 

While Scott Pinsker, publicity and branding expert, speculated that many stars may just think hacks can't happen to them.
 

"Celebrities have made careers out of defying the odds. They've achieved enormous success in highly-competitive industries... They don't think they'll get hacked because they've proven the naysayers wrong every step of the way," Pinsker speculated. "The rules don't ever seem to apply to them."
 

Still, if stars must take compromising pics, co-founder of the cyber security firm RISKGEN Chris Jones said there are smarter ways to go about it.
 

“If something can be seen it can be copied and that's the biggest risk of transmitting a sensitive image," he explained. "If you do need to send an intimate picture, I would use an ephemeral app like Snapchat, where you can control how long the image remains in the system before it is purged."

Htc U11 VS Nokia 8 Review

Nokia announced its 2017 flagship smartphone at an event in August in the form of the Nokia 8. It joins the company's portfolio of three Android devices that were introduced at the beginning of the year, but it brings more advanced hardware and a couple of stand out polished finishes.

The HTC U11 is another flagship smartphone that offers a slightly more exciting finish, along with a great set of specs. The question is how do the two compare for those in the market for a device so shiny, they'd give a diamond a run for its money? We've put the Nokia 8 up against the HTC U11 to find out.

The Nokia 8 features an aluminium body with a softly curved rear that measures 151.5 x 73.7 x 7.9mm. The antenna bands are positioned on the top and bottom of the device rather than on the rear for a more seamless finish and the Nokia 8 comes in four colours, including a striking Polished Copper and Polished Blue glossy finish.

There is a fingerprint sensor within a capacitive button on the front of the device beneath the display, a slim dual-camera setup on the rear and both USB Type-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack are on board. The Nokia 8 offers no waterproofing however.

The HTC U11 also offers a striking finish, this time achieved with a liquid glass surface that features layers of refractive minerals to create beautiful colours. It too offers a curved rear but it is a little larger than the Nokia 8 at 153.9 x 75.9 x 7.9mm and it has squeezable sides that deliver a set of functions when pushed. The antenna bands are positioned on the edges around the device, while a single lens camera sits on the rear with simple HTC branding below.

Like the Nokia 8, there is a capacitive button below the screen on the HTC U11 too, which also features a fingerprint sensor built into it and USB Type-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack are both present. Unlike the Nokia 8, the HTC U11 is waterproof with an rating of IP67.

The Nokia 8 has a 5.3-inch IPS LCD display that features a Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels for a pixel density of 554ppi. It offers 700nits of brightness and it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

A standard aspect ratio of 16:9 is present on the Nokia 8 and there are no extra thrills in place, like Mobile HDR, as there are on some other 2017 flagships.

The HTC U11 has a slightly larger display than the Nokia 8 at 5.5-inches. It too is LCD, with HTC calling it Super LCD, and it too has a Quad HD resolution, meaning its pixel density is a little lower than the Nokia because of the size increase at 534ppi. This is unlikely to be noticeable to the human eye though.

Similar to the Nokia 8, the HTC U11 doesn't offer Mobile HDR compatibility like the Samsung Galaxy S8 or LG G6, it sticks with the standard 16:9 aspect ratio too and it is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The camera department is where the Nokia 8 is hoping to shine. It offers two 13-megapixel sensors on the rear, with one RGB sensor and one monochrome sensor. There is an aperture of f/2.0 on board, along with 1.12µm pixels, phase detection autofocus and IR focus assist.

Nokia has teamed up with Zeiss for its lenses in a drive for quality, and it has also introduced a feature called Dual-Sight that allows for simultaneous capture from the front and rear cameras with the ability to stream these live to FaceBook or YouTube. The front camera is a 13-megapixel sensor, also with f/2.0 and 1.12µm pixels.

The HTC U11 meanwhile has a single 12-megapixel HTC UltraPixel 3 sensor featuring 1.4µm pixels, optical image stabilisation, an f/1.7 aperture and what the company calls UltraSpeed Autofocus.

On the front is a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and features such as Live Make-Up, Auto Selfie and Voice Selfie. It doesn't however offer the "Bothie", which is what Nokia is calling the result of the dual capture and something the HTC Desire Eye did offer.

The Nokia 8 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and microSD support for further storage expansion. There's a 3090mAh battery on board with support for Quick Charge 3.0 and as we mentioned previously, it is charged via USB Type-C.
In terms of audio, the Nokia 8 will be able to capture 360 audio with an Ozo audio feature.

The HTC U11 also runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage an microSD support, meaning the performance between these two devices should be very similar, theoretically. The battery is a little smaller at 3000mAh but it too offers Quick Charge 3.0 support and is charged via USB Type-C.

Audio has been a huge focus for HTC in its flagships and the U11 is no different, featuring BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition. It also offers 3D Audio recording with four microphones, HTC USonic with Active Noise Cancellation and support for Hi-Res audio.

The Nokia 8 runs on pure Android Nougat with no bloatware and no pre-installed apps, except a support app. Nokia reworked the camera app to incorporate the various features offered but aside from that, it is stock Android, meaning quick updates to the next build.

The HTC U11 also runs Android Nougat but it features a refined version of HTC Sense over the top, coupled with the HTC Sense Companion app that provides suggestions based on the things you do. HTC also has HTC Edge Sense, which launches a range of features when you squeeze the phone and it offers Amazon Alexa.

Ultimately, the software experience between these two devices will therefore be quite different, despite them running on the same platform.

Nokia 8 vs HTC U 11: Price

The Nokia 8 will go on sale at the beginning of September for €599, which works out at around £550.

The HTC U11 is available now and costs £649, making it around £100 more expensive than the Nokia device.

Nokia 8 vs HTC U 11: Conclusion

Look at the numbers and the Nokia 8 and HTC U11 are pretty much neck and neck. They have the same processor, same RAM, same storage and very similar battery capacities, as well as microSD support. They also both have the same resolution displays, along with the same display technology.

The Nokia 8 moves in a different direction to HTC in the camera department, offering a dual-setup over singular, but HTC has done dual before and gone back to singular so it's not that the company is late to the party, it's just chosen a different path this time.

The Nokia also offers stock Android, which some may prefer over HTC's Sense bloatware, while others may like the variation that comes with Sense. HTC also offers waterproofing, squeezable edges and a bigger display, while the Nokia screen packs in a few extra pixels. Both deliver in the design department though.

The decision between these two devices will come down to the features most important to you, as well as your budget. The HTC U11 is a great phone and the Nokia 8 has all the features to achieve greatness so it's unlikely you'll be disappointed with either.
